2010 Winter Games By-Law
regarding the Vancouver 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games

A special by-law has been created for the duration of the Olympics... will any of these affect your business operations?

The proposed by-law includes components previously approved by Council; updated provisions related principally to temporary buildings; and new provisions related to regulating the security of visitors to LiveCity sites and City controlled sites; noise management; distribution and display of advertising materials; use of streets; and use of public and private sites.

A synopsis of this by-law is:
  • Patio operations: New bylaws allow for patio operating hours to continue until 1am nightly, during the Olympic Games period - January 1st to March 31st 2010.
  • Weatherproofing of restaurant patios may begin now including the addition of transparent temporary walls, lowered canvas awnings and banquette seating. Subject to permit, restaurants in South Granville will be able to create additional on-street patio space.
  • Business operations: Deliveries to the downtown peninsula 24 hours per day. Solid waste removal would be allowed from 5am to 12am Monday to Friday and 8am-12am Saturday and Sunday.
  • Distribution of flyers, marketing and advertising materials will not be allowed on any City streets, sidewalks, parks or property. This will be strictly enforced.
  • Signage: The bylaw allows for large format signage to be installed as soon as October 1, 2009 on approved properties only. Third party signage will not be permitted on street/dock tents or patios.
