What on earth are these men doing? Suits, pontoons, water, electricity—seems rather dangerous to me!
Do you have photos like this? Is one of the men in the picture a relative? Do you have any idea what they were doing?
Do you have photos, know any stories or historical facts about South Granville?
The Vancouver Archive notes say: 1913 Men on float in False Creek to determine electric currents from streetcar tracks in Fairview area. Men in photograph include Distribution Engineer Mr. Busch (in bowler hat), and Assistant Engineer R. Lyon (in cloth cap). Thank you Major Matthews.
We, at the South Granville Business Improvement Association, love our neighbourhood. For the past several years we have had the honour and the pleasure of gathering photos and stories from the archives, public library, and private collections to create a permanent record of our community history. Our efforts have resulted in a BC Heritage Award and recognition from the Vancouver Heritage Commission. We are very proud of our efforts to preserve and protect our local story.
Now, we would like to hear from you…
- Are you or your family long time residents—tell us your family story.
- Do you have photos of South Granville? We want a copy (the older the better)! High Resolution digital images (jpeg) would be best but if that is not your forte, we can do it for you. We are hunting for photos of the Roxy Theatre; the baseball field beside Fairview School; the Dance Hall at Broadway; the Mini Golf at 14th; any houses on Granville that may have been around before our retail stores were built. Even more recent pictures of stores that have sadly disappeared would be wonderful. People pictures. Even if South Granville is not the primary subject, we can often learn things by looking at the less obvious. Don’t hesitate about the condition of the photo—we can do miracles with technology.
- Tell us any history you know of the area, especially if it is personal.

Our family has been in Vancouver for 3 generations and I have loved hearing all of the stories from my grandmother and great aunt about going dancing at the Commodore, nights out on the town, etc. We love Vancouver and South Granville has been a large part of our fun family history!
