Update: Space98

So we started it: a few intrepid urbanists and myself took on the task of bringing a little bit of life to an unused bus shelter. As people passed, many of them didn’t notice us hard at work but some stopped and asked what we were up to and gave us some words of encouragement. People who did stop, saw the potential for the space just as we did—many wanted to see some busker/music space added. What do you think? (See #space98 on Twitter if you want to add your thoughts there.)

Here are some photos of the proceedings:

Winsor Gallery presents The Future Is Female, Apr 4-May 6

The-Future-is-Female-Angela-Grossmann-Winsor-Gallery-South-Granville-Vancouver Winsor Gallery on South Granville presents The Future Is Female, an exhibition of new paintings by Angela Grossmann from April 4th to May 6th, 2012.

In her exhibition of new work entitled The Future is Female, Angela Grossmann investigates the female form and the ways in which girls and women are shaped by both deeply personal experiences and socially prescribed notions of female status, sexuality, femininity and conventional beauty.

The title of the exhibition is inspired by a button emblazoned with the caption “The Future is Female”, which Grossmann found at a local junk shop while a student at Emily Carr in the mid-‘80s. Like so many of the cast-offs—postcards and postage stamps, letters, books and particularly vintage photos—that would later become raw material for her collage paintings, the button appealed to Grossmann on multiple levels, as a brazen declaration, a portend of the future and an abandoned relic of second-wave feminism.

Uno Langmann Limited presents Romantic Nature, Apr 2012

Peder-Monsted-uno-langmann-limited-17817

For the month of April 2012 Uno Langmann Limited presents the exhibition Romantic Nature: European Landscapes.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries Landscape painters became influenced by the Romantic movement circulating throughout Europe; although it was not a cohesive movement it was generally marked by creative explorations of emotions, irrational thought, and personal experience. As a result, this romantic approach to Landscape painting rejected many traditional methods of art instruction and relied instead upon the artists’ intuitive response to the observable world.

This exhibition includes works by Peder Monsted, Jose Weiss, James Wilson Carmichael, Paul Desire Trouillebert, Arnold Marc Gorter, and Maurice Levis.
