We saw dreamgirls may9 thursday night. Sat in row 2 seats 1 and 2. We watched the bums and backs of all the actors. Felt very disengaged. I would think that was bad directing. It was a long night nOt seeing many faces. Only seeing tr back of most. They should be taught to open and face the crowd and open up. The show was ruined as i only wayched the backs of people.

Hi Susan,

We removed the hours from the desktop version of this article back in July 2012. We removed them at that time to guard against any further confusion. But unfortunately the hours were still showing in the mobile version of the site, and that is what you might have seen. We have since removed the hours from both pages of the site in relationship to this article. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

I also came to your store at 730, thinking I had an half hour left to spare. Got confused by the 7pm closure on the door,

I see an earlier post just now - apparently the hours on the article need to be changed.

Tait's Mill at the foot of Fir was bought out by the Rat Portage Company in the early 1900s. The company expanded westward picking up mills along the coast including Harrison Mills and Tait's concern making it one of the biggest lumber firms in the country. The name has nothing to do with the rats that are still a presence on the shoreline.

Granville island was constructed in 1913 using a coffer dam and sand pumped in from English Bay.

I always thought Rat Portage was the area at the foot of Fir St., now occupied by the Pennyfarthing building and the waterline where the Canadian Fisheries has a facility. There was a another sawmill located there -- the name may have been changed by the 1930-1940s. The sawmill in that location looked smaller than the one illustrated with this comment. It was said that the location was a Rat Portage because at low tide, rats would scurry across the then tidal flats to and from Granville Island. During the 1960s and into the 1970s there was intermittent dredging taking place in False Creek that would formalize the present outline of Granville Island and the present waterfront of False Creek. Tidal Flats, Shoals and Sandbanks dissappeared.
My business was near First and Main. I was not aware that the Tait Mill had a association with the town of Rat Portage, the former name of Kenora.

Curious? I always associated the Peter Pan Ballroom with Peter Pantages -- who I think initiated or led the January 1st English Bay Polar Bear swim. I think, Peter Pantages, later had a restaurant near Granville and Davie. I went to High School with his sons and nephew at the old King Edward High School, 1946-1951.
The photo associated with this entry is most likely the north-east corner of Broadway and Granville (1400 block west Broadway), now occupied by the Royal Bank. The dark coloured frame buildings on the far right, to the east and across the lane were once owned by a family member, and were destroyed in a major fire late 1980s or early 1990s. Streetcars were removed in the early 1950s.

My father-in-law purchased Cresent Court in about 1950-1955. I believe he purchased it from a lawyer who was from an old Vancouver family -- the Lando family. My former wife inherited it after her father died in 1966. She/we managed the building until she sold it in about 1974-1975 -- I think to a Mr. Fanning. I once had the original Architectural drawings -- they may still be amongst my old records. I see that Piggly Wiggly occupies the main floor in the accompanying photo, but I recall that it was occupied by a Delicatessen during the late 1930s untill the mid or late 1940s. During the late 1960s it was occupied by Porte's Pharmacy who later moved to middle of the next block and later became Shoppers. After Porte's Pharmacy moved out, I believe the Bau Xi Art Gallery was established and moved in.
