HAPPY NEW YOU! CINDY YU AT CIVELLO SALON

8TH JANUARY 2017

The New Year often brings with it a time of reflection and a strong desire for self improvement. From gym memberships to detoxing there’s no shortage of things to do to look and feel better.

For me, this also includes taking good care of my hair. For years, I’ve colored, ironed, curled and blown it to shreds (sometimes literally). We often assume that haircare is only important during special events or for a photo shoot. My hair will tell you differently; it needs care every day and this often goes beyond what you can do yourself. You need the experts – not once, not twice but over a long period of time. Hair takes time to grow and it also needs time to heal and strengthen.

To that end, I’m thrilled to announce my partnership with Aveda Canada and Civello Salons in Vancouver. More importantly, I’m so excited to have my very own Civello Salon in my neighborhood of South Granville. It’s centrally located on Granville near Broadway (2714 Granville Street) and is literally five minutes from my house. There’s also one in downtown Vancouver on Robson which makes touch ups so convenient at lunch hours or after work. Because I mostly work from home, having my own salon five minutes away means I can get fabulous, healthy hair in record time – and still get home in time to work, have meetings or spend time with my kids.

The South Granville Civello salon is spacious and the staff are so wonderfully welcoming. I knew that going in, I wanted my hair lighter overall and it desperately needed a trim. After years of neglect, my hair was screaming for moisture and a little TLC.

Elin, my colourist, was so thorough in her review of my hair and all our options. Because I had previously colored my hair there was really no fresh virgin strands to work with, so we decided to add foil highlights throughout my hair to lighten the look overall.

While Elin was applying my the highlights, we talked about her native Sweden and how she moved from there to Vancouver. We talked about how beautiful our city is and how so many people move to Vancouver to follow their heart. Working with a new stylist can sometimes be tricky. Communication is the key and it was important that Elin and I had a bond – we formed one very quickly so I know this is the beginning of a great partnership.

Processing time for the highlights can be a while. You’re often either checking your phone or reading magazines. I was kept busy with both – but also with tea and biscotti – plus a wonderful hand massage by Aleysha. With the amazingly scented Aveda products no less. This is true pampering.

Aleysha also did my shampoo and rinse when it was time and also applied a botanical treatment to my hair that sealed in much needed moisture. I think I could almost hear my hair breathe a sigh of relief.

After the shampoo and rinse, I was headed to visit Hayley who did my cut and style. If there’s one word to describe this girl it would be “meticulous”. Also “technical” comes to mind. She took some weight off the back of my hair and added in some layers near the front to make the look more interesting.

She also taught me how to blow dry my hair in a way that would tame the front center part. After pregnancy, your hormones can change so many things in your body – one of which is added cowlicks to your hair. Yes – that can happen – can you believe it? Even years later, my damn cowlick is still there and I normally have to use a flat iron to calm it down. But Hayley taught me how to properly blow dry my hair to ensure that it stays down and that no flat iron intervention is needed. That tip was *so* awesome I can’t begin to tell you! You’ll just have to go visit her yourself and get schooled!

After the blow dry, she styled my hair with tousled beach waves a la Alexa Chung – one of my biggest style icons. In the end, I was *so* happy with my new look and felt so relaxed and pampered. I cannot wait until my next appointment with these hair specialists – cuz that’s what they are. And only a five minute drive away.
