Petley Jones Gallery presents Blake Ward: The Space Within
Until Oct 18, 2018

Blake Ward’s works from his Spirits Collection expand on the techniques of figurative sculpture developed in antiquity. Challenging established norms, these sculptures illustrate Ward’s contrarian approach presenting the contemporary figure by revealing the interior space of the human form thus evoking a dialogue between the conscious and the unconscious.  Holding fast to his love of the human figure, Ward leads us toward self-discovery.

Ian Tan Gallery presents Tim Fraser: LIT
October 6 – 31, 2018

For years Tim Fraser has been exercising his painterly instincts along the Stanley Park seawall by composing endless combinations of shapes, line and colour – giving this beloved Vancouver landmark its due treatment. Through his practice, Tim intersects painting and walking as meditative pastimes, his pictures delving into a formalist abstraction of feeling. Morphed into a serotonin-soaked haze of idyllic colour, Fraser’s imagination evokes the pleasure of navigating a sun-drenched, candy coloured world, where one need only consider the sun glancing off the path in luminous swoops and curves. Read More.

Bau-Xi Gallery Vancouver presents George Byrnes: Block Colour
October 13 – 27, 2018

Bau-Xi Gallery introduces Sydney-born, Los-Angeles based photographer George Byrne to their artist roster. Byrne’s inaugural exhibition at Bau-Xi Vancouver, Block Colour explores the graphic simplicity of architectural form and light across different neighbourhoods in Los Angeles. Byrne creates large-scale photographs that depict architectural surfaces and landscapes as painterly abstractions. Borrowing from the clean, vivid clarity of modernist painting, he also references the New Topographics photography movement via a subject matter firmly entrenched in the urban every day. Read More.

Elissa Cristall Gallery presents Amanda Reeves: New Paintings
October 13 – November 3, 2018

Elissa Cristall Gallery presents New Paintings by Amanda Reeves whose colourful yet subtly nuanced abstract paintings invite the viewer to engage in the slowed contemplation of looking. With meticulous preparation, the varied layers of acrylic wash stand as a visual ground for the precise geometric shapes overlaid. The desire to secure the paintings in focus is thwarted by their bright colours and tonal shifts; the floating and popping effect of the flat painted shapes confuses their spatial relationships and the layers become indistinct. Kurbatoff Art Gallery presents Reinhard Skoracki: The Taught Ignorance
October 18 – November 6, 2018

Reinhard Skoracki’s sculptures illustrate the essence of what it means to be human. His bronzes use the human form along with humour and satire to express social and political views. `My sculptures/figures are launched against a backdrop of social or historical drama. We have no choice but to constantly witness time’s passage within us and around us. At first glance, the toy-like sculptures seem supremely the gift of this time. This is a camouflage,` says Skoracki.  Read more.
