How does the City manage traffic impacts?

The City coordinates activities by our own crews/contractors and those of third-parties (such as private developers, utilities like BC Hydro and Metro Vancouver, film, and special events) to limit the impacts on residents, businesses, and all road users. Permits include provisions for lane closures/restrictions and staff actively monitors this work to ensure compliance.

New development sites are given specific street use requirements that are reasonable for their construction needs while maintaining an equitable level of service for road users. Each site requires new utilities, such as sewer lines, to service the building. The City requires that these connections be coordinated whenever possible through joint trenching and a single set of traffic impacts. As existing buildings age, they require short term Street Use Permits to access rooftops with materials and equipment for necessary repairs.

Engineering collaborates with the Vancouver Police Department’s Traffic Authority, who direct traffic at critical points around construction work to help ease bottle-necks.

The City makes every effort to keep residents, businesses and road users informed of traffic impacts. Here are a few ways we provide information on upcoming street impacts:

vancouver.ca/road-closure: all works coordinated by the City can be found here, to help you plan your trip in advance

VanConnect: download the app to help you manage your commute while on the road

Changeable message signage and public advisory signage for people driving, cycling, or walking while on the move

Social media traffic alerts: for the latest information and updates on large projects, major road closures or high impact special events follow the hashtag #VanTraffic and accounts for the City of Vancouver and Vancouver Police Department on Twitter

We continue to be dedicated to coordinating the varying traffic impacts associated with street use to minimize the effects on those reliant on the street network.
