The Rise of Resale: How South Granville's Turnabout Is Responding to Changing Consumer Habits

As demand for second-hand goods grows across Canada, South Granville retailer Turnabout is demonstrating how independent businesses can adapt to changing shopping habits.

The resale market is gaining momentum, driven by younger consumers seeking affordability, sustainability and unique finds. According to a recent Business in Vancouver article, a survey by DIG360 and Angus Reid Group found that 77 per cent of Canadian adults purchased at least one pre-owned item in the past year. That figure climbs to 86 per cent among Gen Z consumers and 83 per cent among Millennials.

For South Granville's Turnabout, this shift presents a significant opportunity.

Founded by Joy Mauro in 1978, the Vancouver-based consignment business has grown to nine locations, including three storefronts along Granville Street between West 15th and 16th avenues. Its latest expansion includes Turnabout LUXE, a dedicated luxury consignment boutique, and Turnabout Men, its first standalone menswear store.

The strategy reflects a broader shift in retail: second-hand shopping is no longer defined solely by affordability. Consumers are increasingly drawn to curated selections, distinctive merchandise and the opportunity to purchase quality pieces at accessible prices.

Turnabout's growth supports this trend. Mauro reports an average annual sales increase of 12 per cent, while online sales have tripled over the past three years.

The movement is also attracting major retailers. Vancouver-based brands including Lululemon and Arc'teryx have introduced resale and repair programs, signalling growing confidence in the circular economy.

What This Means for Local Businesses

Turnabout's continued expansion offers a useful example of how established retailers can evolve alongside consumer preferences. Its approach emphasizes specialized merchandising, a strong physical retail presence and an expanding e-commerce business.

For South Granville, the success of independent retailers like Turnabout reinforces the district's reputation as a destination for distinctive shopping experiences. It also demonstrates how businesses with deep neighbourhood roots can remain relevant by recognizing emerging consumer trends and responding with purpose.
