Use Your Sidewalk with Confidence
Here’s your friendly reference for using the public space around your business. What’s yours to manage, what’s the City’s to maintain, and how to keep things running smoothly through the seasons.
Every swept sidewalk, well-placed sign, and tidy frontage helps keep South Granville looking its best. Thanks for doing your part to keep our streets welcoming, accessible, and safe for everyone.
SIDEWALKS 101
The City of Vancouver maintains the structure of sidewalks, while businesses look after how they’re used day to day.
To keep everything accessible:
Maintain at least 2.4 m of clear space for people using wheelchairs, strollers, or walking side by side.
Avoid obstructions like patio furniture, merchandise, or construction materials.
SIGNS, SANDWICH BOARDS & DISPLAYS
A quick refresher on what’s permitted:
One sign per business (up to 2.5 m²) for up to 60 days a year.
On City property: one sandwich board, placed right next to your building or at the property line (not mid-sidewalk or by the curb).
Signage must only promote products and services you offer.
Posters are only permitted on poles with poster cylinders.
If you’d like to extend outdoors:
Patios need a permit, accessible seating, and a 1.1 m aisle.
Merchandise displays like flower carts or fruit bins also require a permit
SEASONAL SAFETY
Fallen leaves and snow can quickly create hazards.
Sweep up wet leaves — don’t rake or blow them into the street (it’s a fineable offence, up to $10 000 under the Street & Traffic By-Law).
Keep storm drains clear to prevent flooding.
In winter, clear snow and ice from sidewalks as soon as possible.
Liability Basics
If your business creates a hazard (i. e. loose signs, banners or umbrellas) you could be held responsible. Regular upkeep protects both your customers and your business.
