Permanent Utility & Night Work

Permanent utility work at the future South Granville Station is expected to begin in late November now that preparatory bypass activities have been completed. Work will take place along Hemlock Street between W 8th Avenue and W 10th Avenue and is expected to continue through spring. A map of the work area is provided below.

What to expect during daytime work

  • Regular work hours are Monday to Saturday from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. There may be occasional work on Sundays and holidays.

  • Some elevated noise during specific activities.

  • Temporary lane closures and changes to pedestrian access to accommodate the reinstatement of utility pipes and equipment staging.

What to expect at night

  • When overnight work is required, work hours can range from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

  • Overnight lighting focused on our sites to ensure crew safety.

We strive to minimize impacts of construction activities on our neighbours, and we are regularly monitoring and adapting mitigations as needed. See below for further information.

When travelling through construction zones, please plan extra time, watch for wayfinding information, and obey traffic control personnel and all signs.

Traffic

  • Lanes on Hemlock Street will be reduced between W. 8th Avenue and W. 10th Avenue during daytime hours as work progresses.

  • Nighttime traffic patterns may vary.

  • Intermittent access to the lane south of W. Broadway via Hemlock Street. Access via W. 10th Avenue will remain open.

  • Left turns at Hemlock Street and Broadway intersection will be restricted; some right-turn restrictions will also be in place.

  • Parking restrictions will be in effect on both sides of Hemlock Street between W. 8th Avenue and W. 11th Avenue.

Construction Activities

  • Deliveries of materials, equipment staging including trucking activities.

  • Excavation, saw cutting, hydrovac, backfilling and Resurfacing work.

Impacts

  • Some elevated noise related to activities that include, but are not limited to, pumps running, excavation, saw cutting, hydrovac and backfilling.

  • Loading zones on Hemlock Street south of Broadway will be restricted at times. A temporary loading area will be provided whenever possible.

  • Access for all abilities will be maintained to residences, businesses, and services.’

Mitigations

  • Mitigation measures include, but are not limited to:

    • Business wayfinding signage will be installed as necessary.

    • Noise barriers installed around some sources of noise.

    • White noise back-up signals on equipment when possible.

    • Directing lights away from residential buildings.

    • Using quieter models of equipment at night, such as hand tools.

These coloured areas do not necessarily represent work happening at the same time. Each block of colour will be broken up into multiple days of work and may happen sequentially, depending on site conditions, scheduling, and weather.

  • Purple area – work zone along Hemlock Street north of W. Broadway

  • Pink area – work zone at the intersection of Hemlock Street and the south of W. Broadway

  • Blue area – work zone along Hemlock Street south of W. Broadway

  • Yellow area – work zone in the laneway
